Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is calling for Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore to “step aside” of Alabama Senate race according to the Associated Press.
McConnell’s comments come after a Washington Post report in which a woman accused Moore of initiating sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was 32.
He was asked if he believes the allegations are true.
“I believe the women,” McConnell said.
Moore has repeatedly denied the allegations.
Most Republican senators who have spoken out about the accusations against Mooore have said he should drop out — if the allegations are true. McConnell added no such qualifier. This is setting up as a proxy war, with Steve Bannon (who has called for McConnell to be removed as speaker) on a mission to discredit Moore’s accusers and McConnell intent on forcing Moore from the race.
