Racism continues to be an issue in America. A Black professor was recently threatened with violence by White supremacists who were upset by her words against President Trump.
Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, professor at Princeton University, recently delivered the commencement address at Hampshire College. During her speech, she spoke about Trump by saying, “The president of the United States, the most powerful politician in the world, is a racist, sexist megalomaniac…It’s not a benign observation, but has meant tragic consequences for many people in our country – from terror-inducing raids in the communities of undocumented immigrants to his disparaging of refugees in search of freedom and respite.”
Following Taylor’s speech, Fox News proved, again, to be irresponsible by inciting their racist viewers. In a news report, Fox News said Taylor had an “Anti-POTUS tirade” and was encouraging activities to “lawlessly thwart the Trump agenda.”
After the report aired, the professor began receiving emails from racist who called her “n—,” “b—,” “shamble,” and “coon.” Other racist Whites threatened to lynch Taylor and to shot her with a .44 Magnum gun.
The threats have led Taylor to cancel her book tour for the book, “#BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation.”
The election of Donald Trump allowed White supremacists to be more comfortable with overt racism. Since Trump was elected, hate crimes have increased across the nation. It’s an issue that will continue to grow worse until racism is banned on all fronts.
Similar to how it’s illegal to be a member of ISIS in America, it should be illegal to be a racist or a member of a White supremacist organization.
Racism leads to hate which can easily turn into violence. As a result, making racism illegal is the only anecdote that will combat White supremacy and White nationalism.
